The quality of business truly reflects the quality of people.

So we’ve got a whole lot really cool stuff going on here at Surge!  Redesigning our website, shooting and editing product/promo videos, etc., the list goes on and on!  Now we’ve decided to move into the wonderful world of Webinars–a seminar on the web…get it?  Webinar?  Clever, right?  Yeah we didn’t come up with the term.

Anyway, we’ve selected six possible topics to cover during our webinar series (listed below)!  We’d love–I mean really love it if you all would leave your thoughts about the topics!  Tell us which one(s) interest you, and feel free to tell us any topics of interest that we’ve missed!

1) Branding (How Businesses Want their Customers to Perceive their Brand)

2) Promotional Marketing (5 Reason Why Promotional Products Boast a Greater ROI than TV and Radio Advertising)

3) Apparel Fundraising (Strategies for Maximizing Profits With Screen Printed and Embroidered Apparel)

4) Promotional Product Fundraising (The Newest Items Sure To Raise Money for Your Organization)

5) Target Program Marketing (Why Forming a Campaign with a Promotional Marketing Expert Can Save You Money!)

6) Online Marketing (Building Your Website with a Purpose – So Google Will Promote You!)

We’re excited about this new project, as we think it will be a big help to all who participate!

Generally speaking, a baby and beer cheese have absolutely nothing in common.  But today, we’re not speaking in generalities.  Today, they do.

We’ve discovered a new love here at Surge:  beer cheese.  It’s delicious.  Matt and Devon have been collaborating and experimenting to find the perfect beer cheese flavor, and we’ve been loving every scrumptious attempt!  We’re a bit obsessed, so much so that we decided to write a blog post about  it!

So where does the baby come in?  Glad you asked.  Get ready for it…Matt and Courtney are pregnant!  Whoo!  They found out on the day of their 5th wedding anniversary!  Now ain’t that just romantic?  Abby is pretty darn excited to be a big sister, and both Matt and Courtney are crazy-excited to become parents squared!  Here’s an artist’ rendering of what the baby may look like:

So there you go!  We’ve got a whole lot of sweet stuff going on around here, and it looks like 2010 is going to be even better than ‘09!  We’re excited for what’s to come!

Our employees are awesome.  They’re hardworking, fun, folks who deserve a little recognition every once in a while–but not too often ;-) So, in order to do this we’ve decided to have our first annual Surgie Awards ceremony!

Here’s what ’s going to happen…

Nominations will be created during the next few weeks, with each of us writing down ridiculous/funny (or ridiculously funny) awards for one another.  Then, on December 21st we will have our mega-awesome awards ceremony, where the top nominations (chosen by Devon and Matt) will be awarded to each employee!  We’ve already begun nominating up a storm, so Matt and Devon have a lot of reading to do!

If you’ve seen the Dundie epidode of The Office, you know how this thing will play out , only our ceremony will be…Surgier (I think I just made up a new word).  We’re even going to have trophies, with the award title engraved on the front!  How sweet is that?!

Needless to say, we’re pretty excited about this, and we look forward to sharing the results with you!

On Friday, June 30th, magic happened.

Okay, so it wasn’t literally “magic,” but it was still a huge day for us, as we celebrated moving into our new facility with a traditional Ribbon Cutting ceremony, sponsored by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce!  We began the festivities around 11:30 AM, and had about 200 of our friends come out to celebrate alongside us (as well as to dine on some fine hamburgers and hot dogs–what outing is complete without food, right)?  As people socialized, they signed their names and “good luck” messages on our Testimonial Banner, and printed their own shirts (with supervision, of course).  We had two different designs and colors of t-shirts (gray and orange) that our guests could choose from, and we let them go to town.  We walked them through the process, step-by-step, and let them set, turn, and print on our manual press (a little effort never hurt anyone)!  All enjoyed the fruits of their labor, as they got to keep their self-produced work of t-shirt art.

In terms of space, we’ve acquired a significant upgrade, as we’ve moved from having only 1500 sq. ft. to 2700!  That’s a 80% increase!  Is it lame that I just figured that out?  Oh well…

Not only do we have significantly more room, but we’re also in a much better, more convenient location!  Our new location is at 307 Jason Drive, right behind Porter Paints.

They say that a picture paints a thousand words.  Now I don’t know who “they” are, but I think they’re right, so here’s some pictures recapping the day:

Can you sense the excitement? Yes.

Can you sense the excitement? Yes.

2009 is here, whether you like it or not.  We, however, are extremely excited about what the next 12 months holds in store for the promotional product world.  In our industry, the first quarter is always kicked off by two very important trade shows: PPAI Expo in Las Vegas and ASI Orlando.

PPAI Expo 2009

ASI Orlando 2009

Last year I was lucky enough to attend the ASI Orlando show.  It was my first true opportunity to put names to faces and meet with suppliers and distributors from across the nation.  I also had the pleasure of attending several interesting workshops, including one phenomenal one with Cliff Quicksell. Cliff’s seminars and workshops are worth their weight in gold, and luckily the one he held in Orlando 2008 was a hands-on learning experience I’ll never forget.

This year I have the privilege to attend PPAI Expo 2009, the mecca of all promotional product trade shows. This trade show is so huge that there are 3 days of exhibiting!
I’ll be flying out for Vegas on the 11th and returning on the 17th. 2 days of education and 3 days of trade show makes Matt a smarter boy! Come by and see all of the new samples and highlights from this year’s PPAI Expo when I get back. Until then….

Surge Promotions employees and their families gathered at Galaxy Bowling in Richmond for a Christmas Party. Not only did some serious bowling go down, but a white elephant gift game was played. Needless to say, there were some unusual gifts. (A water sprinkler, gloves, a bowling ball, and a toilet plunger just to name a few) It was a wonderful party in which everyone enjoyed!

As 2008 winds down over the next 3 weeks students are taking finals, teachers are making plans for the holidays, businesses are crunching the numbers, and the churches are preparing for their Christmas plays.  During the last few weeks of December Surge Promotions will be taking a long, hard look at 2008 and making some predictions, changes and goals for 2009.

However, our most important goal for 2009 is to have a face-lift of the customer service here at Surge.  We are working on what we are calling “The Surge Customer Experience”.  Our goal is to change the customers expectations in our industry.  If you have ever ordered t-shirts, ink pens, mugs, caps, polos or any of our 800,000 promotional products that we offer - you know what it’s like.  Some companies seem to care about their customers, and some don’t.  Some companies make you stand at a counter and tell them what you want your t-shirts to say.  You cross your fingers for 3 weeks only to pick up your t-shirts with misspelled words.  Or maybe a company tells you that there is a $200 minimum order, but you only want 100 stadium cups.  Oh, and by the way – how dare you want to see a sample of it before you buy!!

These may sound like crazy scenarios, but these are the obstacles our customers have faced for decades.  And the crazy part about it is – a lot of those same customers have come to expect that!  They go in with a mindset that it’s a crapshoot of whether they get what they wanted.  They see a picture of a baseball cap and hope the picture in the catalog is accurate, but they won’t know if they match those baseball pants until after they’re embroidered.  Will that lanyard clip work with our namebadges?  Oh what the heck, let’s roll the dice and here’s my check for $750.  You have a $12.00 fee for a faxed proof?  I can’t afford that, so I’m willing to risk that my 1,000 ink pens might have copy that fills in and isn’t legible.

These are the exact expectations that are plaguing our industry.  In 2009 our ultimate goal is to change the rules!  When we answer the phone, return an email or you walk into our office, we want the Surge Customer Experience to be everywhere.   It will be the conference table we sit at together!  It’s the free drinks you receive during your visit.  It’s our free sample policy to qualified clients and prospects.  It’s our 100% guarantee of accuracy and customer satisfaction.  It’s our free artwork approval prior to production.  It’s the comfort of knowing that all of our employees have one priority – and that’s earning your business every single day.

That is where we are going in 2009.  It will be a much greater ride if you’ll join us!

If you didn’t come out to the eating contest last Friday and you didn’t see the front page of the Richmond Register on Saturday, here is a quick update of what went down.

Team Surge= 31 hotdogs     Team EKU Football= 44

Even though we got our butts kicked by the football team, we still had a lot of fun!

Surge Promotions is training hard-core for the contest tomorrow. Watch out!
