In the wee hours of the morning (like 8:30, so not that “wee”), Surge employees met in secrecy to plan out their, well…plan.  Streamers, confetti, and cake…yup, a party was going down!  The occasion?  Katie’s one year anniversary here at Surge!  Whoo!

She entered her office, unprepared for the bludgeon of awesomeness she was about to encounter!  She was so moved that she cried…okay, not really, but she was really excited!  Then, as she blew out her candles, she was dominated by an onslaught of what some would call, “silly string;” we like to call it “the greatest invention ever made!”

We laughed, we ate cake, we silly stringed.  All in all, it was a great day!

Katie, thank you for your cheerful smile, your lighthearted attitude, and your incredible hard work.  We love and appreciate you, very much!

Now get back to work.

‘Twas the night before the 22nd, and all throughout Surge,

About 20 people were stirring, as laughter emerged,

From out of their mouths, loud and obnoxious,

As Devon laughed so hard, he nearly became unconscious.

The awards were pronounced, and all were filled with glee,

As each was awarded their very first Surgie.

Last night we hosted our very first Surgie awards ceremony, and, needless to say, it was a rockin’ evening!  We laughed, we cried, we gave awful acceptance speeches, all in good fun!  Many nominations were written for each employee, (such honorable mentions were the “Best Mennonite Ninja Assassin” Award and the “What’s That Bunny Thing With the Horns Called?” Award), but only one nomination for each employee rose to the top!  The winners of this years Surgie Awards are:

“Most Nonchalant Order-Sneaker” Award – Matt

“I Laughed So Hard I Pooped A Little Bit” Award – Devon

“Most Likely To Mess Up Right Before a Review” Award – Katie

“Biggest Risk to Worker’s Comp” Award – Bryan

“Most Likely to Scream When a Customer is Up Front” Award – Clark

“Queen of ‘Pop’” Award – Jennifer

“Best Adjectives” Award – Jered

“Most Likely to Break Out in Song” Award – Clay

“Most Likely to Count an Order Three Times” Award – Kristin

“Smiley-Pete” Award – Josh

Ain’t it purty?

Each employee gave a heartfelt, tear-jerking acceptance speech after each recognition.  Actually…most just sat back down.  But, they were smiling!  And that’s what’s important!

So thank you all, for a great year!  We look forward to bringing in 2010!

Keep checking back for more updates on our crazy-cool lives here at Surge!

You guys are awesome!

On Friday, June 30th, magic happened.

Okay, so it wasn’t literally “magic,” but it was still a huge day for us, as we celebrated moving into our new facility with a traditional Ribbon Cutting ceremony, sponsored by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce!  We began the festivities around 11:30 AM, and had about 200 of our friends come out to celebrate alongside us (as well as to dine on some fine hamburgers and hot dogs–what outing is complete without food, right)?  As people socialized, they signed their names and “good luck” messages on our Testimonial Banner, and printed their own shirts (with supervision, of course).  We had two different designs and colors of t-shirts (gray and orange) that our guests could choose from, and we let them go to town.  We walked them through the process, step-by-step, and let them set, turn, and print on our manual press (a little effort never hurt anyone)!  All enjoyed the fruits of their labor, as they got to keep their self-produced work of t-shirt art.

In terms of space, we’ve acquired a significant upgrade, as we’ve moved from having only 1500 sq. ft. to 2700!  That’s a 80% increase!  Is it lame that I just figured that out?  Oh well…

Not only do we have significantly more room, but we’re also in a much better, more convenient location!  Our new location is at 307 Jason Drive, right behind Porter Paints.

They say that a picture paints a thousand words.  Now I don’t know who “they” are, but I think they’re right, so here’s some pictures recapping the day:

Can you sense the excitement? Yes.

Can you sense the excitement? Yes.

Normally, when I think about blogging, it’s thoughts about happy stuff and funny stuff and “life is great” kind of stuff… but I have been thinking a little differently for the past few minutes.  I’ve been pondering God and His grace; my family and how important they are to me; my friends and how much joy and laughter they bring me daily; and about death and how it can creep up and pounce when we least expect it.  Why am I thinking about death?  Because Matt and I just returned from a friends layout.  Our friend was Trevor Jones.

Funerals are tough.  Death is tough.  Death at age 29 is tougher.  The people in attendance at Trevor’s funeral were a wonderful mix of skaters, lawyers, business men, parents, retired people, tattoo artists, rich people, not-so-rich people, people in dresses and suits and people in leather and Anesthetic t-shirts.  It was obvious that Trevor’s life touched a lot of people.  As I looked around I saw many familiar faces and many strange faces.  People who I expected and some who I thought, “Now, how in the world did they know Trevor?”  Then I thought, the same way I knew him.  Because if Trevor ever met you, he wouldn’t let you forget him.  He would always holler at you and throw up his hand no matter who he was with or who you were with.

Trevor left behind a great legacy of art.  Some on paper and some on skin, but all beautiful.  Colorful, pure talent displayed for all.  Left behind to bring joy to those who see it.  As I think about Trevor, a good feeling starts.  I think of funny, happy times and of jokes and friends.  I think of nieces and nephews and how, through them, I knew Trevor.  I think of many people saying, “He was a good boy”.  So, I guess this blog isn’t really that different after all.  It’s about a celebration, and happy stuff, and funny stuff and “Life-is-great” kind of stuff.  Life is great and death is great- it’s just hard to see that with our human eyes.  Trevor has gone on to be with God forever.  Congratulations, Trevor!
