Chocolate eggs, fake grass, and big giant bunnies. Easter has come. To celebrate, we had ourselves a team building exercise. Now I realize that the phrase “team building exercise” conjures up thoughts of employees out in the middle of Whoknowswhere “learning” the names of people they’ve known for 10 years by throwing a ball around in a circle, but here we do things a bit differently. It’s way more fun.

Check out the epicness of our Easter celebration:

We hope that you had a wonderful holiday full of joy! We sure did!

An update after the Elite Eight Round of the NCAA Tournament.  Most of the brackets are complete with this year’s upsets.  Thanks so much for playing, and the winners will be contacted for their prizes and pictures will follow soon!

Every now and then, a local celebrity comes and pays us a visit.  We love it!

Nearly every single person in Richmond has at least heard about Big World, but few get the honor, nay, the privilege of speaking to him face-to-face.  I (Clay) was once one of those people.

Not anymore.

Good ol’ World came in today, and once I heard of his arrival, I sprung into action!  I wasn’t going to miss my chance to interview a local legend.  So after a few minutes of back-and-forth chit-chat, I asked him if he’d like to say a few words about Surge.  He agreed…

Here is the encouraging words of one of the most gentle people you’ll ever meet, Mr. Big World:

With the excitement of March Madness, we’ve decided to hold a NCAA Tournament Pool!  Here is a brief run down of the details:

  2. Brackets must filled out and turned in by Thursday, March 18th at 10:00 AM to be eligible.
  3. Brackets must be accompanied with payment or will not be eligible.

You must select the winning team of each tournament game and predict the total combined score of the Championship Game. You will receive points based on the games scoring system described below. The contestant with the highest Total Score after the Championship Game currently scheduled for Monday, April 5, 2010 wins the Grand Prize (as defined below).

Points are earned based on the scoring system below.

  • Round 2 of 32 teams – 2 points per correct answer
  • Round 3 of 16 teams – 4 points per correct answer
  • Round 4 of 8 teams – 6 points per correct answer

Foursquare.  There’s an app for that.

The foundations of the playground shudder as four children, pitted against one another, fight to become (or remain) king.  It’s a childhood past time, and only the strong survive.

foursquare

But today we’re not talking playground competition, but rather technological innovation!  Created by a small group of developers, foursquare is a new smart phone-based application that takes elements from Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites and adds GPS functionality.  Where these other social sites connect people digitally, foursquare seeks to connect people geographically.  Users of the program “check-in” when they arrive at a particular location.  This location could literally be anywhere.  Seriously, anywhere. Restaurants, gas stations, bowling alleys, pubs, homes, a pothole in the middle of Main Street, all are fair game in the world of foursquare.

Locations are generated by users.  When a foursquare user publishes a new location, it pops up on the foursquare system for all to see!  Points and “badges” (which are often hysterical) are awarded to users as they accomplish certain tasks:  creating a new location, visiting a certain location multiple times in one day, becoming “mayor” by visiting that location more than any other user, etc.  As people visit locations and “check-in” in real-time, they are allowed the opportunity to post tips and hints to other users in the area!  For example, if the chili-cheeseburger at So and So’s hamburger joint is a must have, a user could post that information as a tip.  Other users in the area would then see that the chili-cheeseburger is the bomb-dot-com and could then head on over to So and So’s to try it out!  foursquare is a unique, tech-savvy way to share your experiences with your friends about the places you’ve been!

And that’s not all.  While twitter is still “building value” before they decide to monetize their efforts, foursquare is not wasting any time.  Most importantly, at least for us marketers, there are more aspects of this application that we can utilize for business purposes.  You can read more about the business marketing aspects of foursquare over at the Surge Promotions Business Blog.   In the meantime, lets see how often you can check in at Surge!

…we’re not even talking Kentucky!

Tomorrow, March 5th, our very own Bryan Duncan will be heading to San Cristobal, Guatemala!  Sounds awesome, right?  Well…that’s because it is!  So what’s the reason for this departure from the States?  He’s going to serve at a local girls home called Prince of Peace, whose mission is to “provide for the whole development (physical, spiritual, emotional, educational, and vocational) of orphaned, abandoned, and abused Guatemalan girls in a Christian home environment so that they, in turn, can serve the Lord and their own nation as godly women of good character and training.”

He will be serving alongside a group of college students from the Baptist Campus Ministry at EKU.  They will be hosting outreach events and developing building projects, adding on whatever else the home needs for them to do!  To say the very least, they’re going to be busy!

The home has become a “beacon of light” for the community, as it is not only a safe haven/refuge for the 50+ girls who reside in the home, but also provides a medical clinic and other community-based services.

Bryan is incredibly excited about this opportunity!  He truly views it as a blessing to be able to serve those in need in another country!  He’s pumped to see what  God is going to do during this week-long excursion to Guatemala!

Pray for him as he goes, and pray for the girls resided at Prince of Peace!  It’s our hope to share his experience with you upon his return, so get excited!

A quarter of a century ago (see also, “cool way to say 25 years ago”) Jered Campbell was brought into this world as a beautiful, bright-shining bundle of joy!  Yesterday, we celebrated his emergence into this world.

Dramatic intro?  Check.  Awesome employee?  Double check.  We just want to take the time to commend him for all of his hard work! As I write this, his creative juices are a-flowin’ as he is crafting design after uber-cool design!  So let’s give a hand for the one, the only, Mr. Jered Campbell.

He would like to take the time for Show and Tell:

Thank you, Jered, for the laughs, the hysterical stories, and the sweet new adjectives!
